RT. HON. GORDON BROWN MP
Chancellor of the Exchequer
Gordon Brown was appointed as Chancellor of the Exchequer on 2 May 1997. He has been MP for Dunfermline East since 1983 and Opposition spokesperson on Treasury and Economic Affairs (Shadow Chancellor) since 1992.
Mr Brown was born in 1951 and educated at Kirkcaldy High School and Edinburgh University where he gained 1st Class Honours and then a Doctorate. He was Rector of Edinburgh University and Chairman of the University Court between 1972 and 1975. From 1976 to 1980, Mr Brown lectured at Edinburgh University and then Caledonian University before taking up a post at Scottish TV (1980 - 1983).
After becoming an MP, Mr Brown was the Chair of the Labour Party Scottish Council (1983 - 1984). Before becoming Shadow Chancellor he held two other senior posts on the Opposition front bench - Shadow Chief Secretary to the Treasury (1987 - 1989) and Shadow Trade and Industry Secretary (1989 -1992).
Mr Brown has had a number of works published including Maxton, The Politics of Nationalism and Devolution and Where There is Greed. He has edited a number of books including John Smith: Life and Soul of the Party and Values, Visions and Voices.
Outside of work, Mr Brown`s interests include football, tennis and film.

Dr Ahmed Mohammed Ali
President of the Islamic Development Bank
HE Dr. Ahmed Mohammed Ali is the President of the Islamic Development Bank Group.
In 1967, Dr. Ali completed his Ph.D. in Public Administration (Finance) from the State University of New York, Albany, USA.
Dr. Ali started his career with the Ministry of Education in KSA and was appointed the Acting Rector of King Abdulaziz University, Jeddah in 1967. In 1972 he was appointed Deputy Minister of Education for Technical Matters and in 1975 he joined the Islamic Development Bank as President.
From 1993 - 1995 he was the Secretary-General of the Muslim World League before joining the IDB as President once again.
Born in Saudi Arabia in 1934, he completed his schooling in his birthplace Madinah.
He obtained his Bachelor degrees in Commerce (1957) and Law (1959) from Cairo University, Egypt. He did his post graduation in Public Administration from Michigan University in Ann Arbor, USA in 1962.

Ahmed Abbas is a Non-Executive Director of Tejoori.
Aged 39, Ahmed has over 15 years of treasury and capital markets experience and is currently the Chief Executive Officer of the Liquidity Management Centre (LMC), Bahrain.
LMC is a finance house which is active in the primary market issuance of a variety of Islamic bonds (Sukuk) as well as in the development of repackaged Islamic-compliant short-term
investment products.
Ahmed is currently a Director of the General Council for Islamic Banks and Financial Institutions. Ahmed was
previously Head of Proprietary Investments at the Arab Banking Corporation.

Steffen Schubert is a Non-Executive Director of Tejoori. Aged 47, Steffen has 20 years’ experience within the financial industry. Currently, Steffen is the Chief Executive Officer of the new Dubai International Financial Exchange (DIFX), located in the Dubai International Financial Centre where he created the Exchange from its initiation stage to completion. As CEO of the EASDAQ exchange, Steffen was involved in the sale of the EASDAQ exchange to NASDAQ.
Steffen has previously held the position of Managing Director of the Bavarian Stock Exchange and was co-founder of the Bourse Consult.

Yaqub Yousuf

Yaqub Yousuf is the CEO of International Holdings Group (IHG), an asset management company in Dubai handling assets for blue-chip companies and high net worth individuals in the Arabian Gulf.
Yaqub has spearheaded the growth of IHG’s numerous entities and its acquisitions locally and internationally, as well as creating a unique corporate culture.
Having originally studied law, he has held the positions of
investment advisor, strategic advisor, in addition to being the shareholders’ representative to a number of prominent Gulf families and companies.
Yaqub’s expertise lies in the concept, formation and development of unique business ventures in international markets.
Previously, Yaqub was instrumental in the development of a number of key government concepts and ventures in the region, in addition to acting as an advisor to many international companies operating in the Middle East.
These include Credit Lyonnais, Aberdeen Asset Management, Marconi Offsets, Ogilvy & Mather and WPP Group. He has also briefed the Department of Economic Development in Dubai, Dubai Internet City, Emaar and the Environmental, Wildlife Research and Development Agency (EWRDA) in Abu Dhabi.

Callum McCarthy
Chairman of the FSA
Callum McCarthy became the Chairman of the FSA on 22 September 2003, having been the first energy regulator responsible for both gas and electricity as Chief Executive of Ofgem and Chairman of the Gas and Electricity Markets Authority, a post he held for five years. He is an economist and graduate of the School of Business at Stanford University (USA), where he was a Sloan Fellow.
His early career was in the chemical industry, and in the Department of Trade and Industry where he held a number of posts including Principal Private Secretary to Roy Hattersley when he was Secretary of State for Prices and Consumer protection and to Norman Tebbit when he was Secretary of State for Trade and Industry.
In 1985 he left DTI and joined Kleinwort Benson as Director of Corporate Finance. In 1989 he joined BZW as Managing Director and Deputy Head of Corporate Finance later becoming Chief Executive Officer of Barclays Bank group operations in Japan before moving to head the Bank’s businesses in North America.

Miles Templeman
Director General IoD
Miles Templeman began his career as a marketing specialist and gained his pedigree leading such major consumer brands as Daz, Ribena, Lucozade and Levis jeans. He moved to general management and became Managing Director of Threshers and then the Whitbread Beer Company. He had great success in building those companies, especially with the growth of such brands as Boddingtons and Stella Artois.
He then had a series of non-executive directorships and consultancy roles including Royal Mail, Ben Sherman and Accenture before becoming Chief Executive of Bulmers, which was eventually successfully sold to Scottish & Newcastle.
A firm believer in the power of the brand and the importance of valuing your team, Miles is a passionate believer in the values of enterprise and assumed the role of Director General at the IoD at a time when its influence and relevance was at an all time peak, particularly with the growing importance of corporate governance, director standards and the importance of entrepreneurship and innovation in business.
Alongside his IoD role, Miles is non-executive Chairman of Shepherd Neame, the Kentish family brewer; non-executive Chairman of restaurant chain YO! Sushi; and a non-executive director of Melrose plc, the buy-out specialist.

Andrew Cahn
CEO United Kingdom Investment & Trade
Andrew started his career in MAFF in 1973 but has since then had two spells in each of the Cabinet Office, FCO and the European Commission.
He became Chief Executive of UKTI in March 2006 after 6 years as Director of Government and Industry Affairs at British Airways.
For much of his career, Andrew focussed on European Union matters. He was seconded to the FCO to work in UKREP Brussels in 1976 and again in 1982. He was part of Lord Cockfield’s team that delivered the 1992 Single Market programme and was Chef de Cabinet of Neil Kinnock. His last Civil Service job was as Deputy Head of the European Secretariat.
Andrew went to Bedales and read English at Cambridge. He is married to Virginia Beardshaw, Chief Executive of I CAN, this is a charity for children with communication difficulties. He has three children aged 23, 19 and 11. He is a Trustee for Royal Botanic Gardens Kew and the Gatsby Foundation.

Prof. Mahmood Faruqui is Vice Chairman, Institute of Islamic Banking & Insurance, London. He is a Fulbright Fellow with Master of Comparative Laws from the University of Pennsylvania; a senior Islamic Finance Lawyer advising on Regulatory & Structuring aspects of Islamic Finance and is reputed as a forward looking, bridge builder between Regulators, Banks, and Shariah Scholars. He was on the Boards of several Islamic & Conventional Financial Institutions and advised on establishing several Joint Venture banks. He led delegations in OIC & other meetings and is often invited to chair, or speak at Islamic Finance Conferences.

Dr. M. Umer Chapra
Research Advisor at the Islamic Research and Training Institute of the Islamic Development Bank.
Dr. M. Umer Chapra is a Saudi citizen who has been serving as Research Advisor at the Islamic Research and Training Institute (IRTI) of the Islamic Development Bank (IDB) since November 1999.
He joined IRTI after retiring as Senior Economic Advisor from the Saudi Arabian Monetary Agency, where he served for a long period of 35 years.
He has also taught in the United States at the Universities of Wisconsin and Kentucky and worked in Pakistan at the Institute of Development Economics and the Islamic Research Institute.
He received the MBA (M.Com) degree from the University of Karachi in 1956, and the Doctor’s degree summa cum laude in Economics in 1961 from the University of Minnesota, Minneapolis. He thus combines an excellent academic background with long practical experience.
He has made seminal contributions to Islamic Economics and Finance over more than three decades in the form of books and monographs (13), papers (81) and book reviews (14). Some of his books and papers have been translated into several languages.
He has also lectured widely on various aspects of Islam and Islamic Economics and Finance at a number of institutions in different countries.
He is on the advisory and review committees of a number of research and educational institutions and academic journals. He has also served as a member of the Technical Committee of the Islamic Financial Services Board.
He has received a number of awards, including the Islamic Development Bank Award for Islamic Economics, and the prestigious King Faysal International Award for Islamic Studies, both in 1989, and the Institute of Overseas Pakistanis’ Award for service to Islam in 1995.

Mirzan Mahathir

Mr Mirzan Mahathir, aged 48 is the founder and President of the Asian Strategy & Leadership Institute (ASLI) since 1993. Through his vision and commitment to developing international partnerships, strategic thinking and leadership, ASLI is now recognised as Malaysia’s foremost conference organizer and knowledge channel. ASLI also facilitates high-level interaction between government and the business community through its conference, research, and business council programmes.
He is also the Executive Chairman and President of Konsortium Logistik Bhd (1992-present); Executive Chairman of Sabit Sdn Bhd (1990-present); and Director of Dataprep Holdings Bhd (1990-present). Prior to this, he was an Associate, Investment Banking for Salomon Brothers, Hong Kong Ltd (1989-1990); and an Associate Proprietary Equity Trading with Salomon Brothers Inc. New York from 1988 to 1989.
He is the co-Chairman of the Malaysia British Business Council. He is a member of the Malaysian South-south Association, a member of the UNESCAP Business Advisory Board and the President of the Container Hauliers Association of Malaysia. He is founder and Chairman of Malaysian Youth Orchestra Foundation.
Mr. Mirzan is a graduate of the Brighton Polytechnic in England with a Bachelor of Science (Honors) in Computer Science. He completed his Masters in Business Administration at the Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania.

Peter Bottomley MP
Peter Bottomley was educated at a mixed comprehensive school in Washington DC, Westminster School and Trinity College, Cambridge. He is married with three children.
He has been Chairman of the Church of England Children's Society, a Trustee of Christian Aid and founded the Family Forum. He has been a member of the Child Poverty Action Group and the Transport House branch of the Transport and General Worker's Union. He is Vice President of the Disabled Driver's Association, a member of the Council of Europe (Western European group) and sits on the Select Committee on the Lord Chancellor's Department.
He is on the council of NACRO, helping the victims of crime by caring for the resettlement of offenders.
Peter Bottomley's special interests include family policy and foreign relations.
He was Parliamentary Private Secretary to Cranley Onslow MP, Minister of State in the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (1982-83) and then Parliamentary Private Secretary to the Rt Hon Norman Fowler, Secretary of State for Social Services and later to the Rt Hon Peter Brooke, Secretary of State for Northern Ireland.
In September 1984, Peter Bottomley was appointed Under-Secretary of State at the Department of Employment. He became Minister of Roads and Traffic at the Department of Transport in January 1986.
From 1989-90 he was Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State at the Northern Ireland Office where his responsibilities included agriculture and the environment.
In 1992 he was appointed to serve for five years on the Select Committee for Transport and in June 1997 he was appointed to serve on the Select Committee on Standards and Privileges. In February 2003 Peter Bottomley was appointed to serve on the new Select Committee scrutinising the work of the Lord Chancellor's Department.
He is a member of the Drapers’ Livery Company and a member of the Transport and General Workers' Union.

Tony Urwin
Tax Partner KPMG
Tony Urwin is a banking tax partner in the UK Financial Services practice of KPMG. He has advised a range of US and European investment and commercial banks and broker-dealers on UK and international banking tax issues over the past 11 years.
In his role as lead UK tax partner for a portfolio of banks he is responsible for the delivery of all tax services to the client including the provision of cross-border advice requiring the full involvement of the KPMG international banking tax network.
In addition to his role as lead tax partner, he specialises in advising front office business units, operations, and group tax departments in the areas of capital markets, derivatives, equity finance, securities trading, structured finance, and securities lending. He also advises on the tax implications of IFRS on financial products.
Tony also leads our Islamic Finance corporate tax team and has worked closely with new UK based Islamic financial institutions and the UK tax authorities to implement new tax legislation to accommodate Sharia’a compliant products. He regularly participates in the Islamic Finance Technical Group meetings with HM Treasury.
Tony joined KPMG in 1995 and participated in the formation of the Capital Markets Group. He was admitted to the partnership in 2000.
Prior to joining KPMG, he spent three years with HMRC and seven years in Information Technology working for investment banks.

Farouq Sheik

Haroon is the Marketing Director of a home grown success story. Back in 1957, the entrepreneurial Kalla family had a vision, a vision that many marketers only came upon after the dawn of the new South Africa. That vision was that the ethnic mass market would be the market of the future in this country. Today, after 44 years of operation, Amka Products is the largest privately owned cosmetic and toiletry company in South Africa. Amka not only supplies local markets, but has distribution networks across Africa, and exports to Europe, America and the Middle East. Amka had been nominated as one of the Top 300 empowerment companies for the last three years.
Haroon is also a Director and Shareholder of Usebe Point, the development company responsible for the Sails on Timeball Square, Durban Point Waterfront with an approximate sales value of just over R400 million, Director and Shareholder of S’on Timeball Square Hotel, a Five Star Hotel to be developed at the Waterfront, and Director and Shareholder of Eagle Creek Investments 289 (Pty) Ltd, the development company responsible for Shaka’s Gate directly outside uShaka Marine World with an approximate sales value of just over R500 million.
Haroon is part of a team that specializes in high rise mixed-use development. He is part of a consortium that is currently tendering for the design and supply of significant retail space on the KZN North Coast.
